San Pedro is in the middle of the Atacama desert, the world’s driest desert. Therefore, water is a very scarce resource.
Water supply is cut down in the WHOLE TOWN during the night, from 21:30 to 06:00 hrs. approx. It can happen that there is low pressure or a water outage during the day, but that is rare. To compensate, we have a water tank, but this may not have enough pressure to ignite the water heater, and you may not be able to take a hot shower, however this is enough to supply water for basic needs. Tap water is drinkable, nevertheless its high minerality can cause digestive problems to those not used to drink it (you have to live here to get used to this water). Also, clothes gets worn out after washing and is not good to water plants. It’s ok to wash fruits and vegetables with it, but you better buy bottled water if you want to drink it or cook water based food (soups or stews). No problems if you want to cook things like pasta, because water is discarded after cooking.
Always remember to carry bottled water with you to all excursions or if you just go walking around the town. Weather is extremely dry and you can dehydrate without even realizing.
It never hurts to suggest using water thoroughly, especially in extreme locations such as San Pedro, where water is really scarce. We encourage our guests to take short showers: 5 minutes is enough to get wet, close the faucet, soap up, open the faucet, rinse off soap, close faucet, and get off the shower.
We permit hand washing only if it’s small clothes in low quantity (some socks or some underwear or a shirt…). You can do this only in the bathroom sink. We offer washing service for quantities over 1 kilogram ($1500 per kilo).

San Pedro’s power supply comes from an oil motor generator. There are no power lines coming from Calama or other place. Usually, power supply is continuous, although is common that in summertime 30 minutes power outages are scheduled twice a day, at 13:00 and at 01:00 hrs. approx. Not scheduled power outages can happen, but it’s not common.
Voltage in Chile is 220 Volts and our power outlets are type C. Remember to carry an adequate power adapter with you if your country uses a different standard than ours.
Like water, electricity must also be used thoroughly. We encourage our guests to turn off unused/unecessary lights and to never leave any type of charger plugged and unattended.
A flashlight is very useful if you want to walk at night by the town as not all the streets have lighting. Also, if you are staying in one of our shared dorms, a flashlight is ideal when you want to get up at night without bothering your roommates.

It’s not necessary to carry all your closet with you, but -along with light clothes for the day and your swimming suit if you want to go to the hotsprings or lagoons- you can’t forget to pack warm clothes for the night and for those excursions requiring it. For example, Tatio Geysers tour leaves from the hostel at 04:00 or 05:00 in the morning, when it’s very cold. It arrives to the geothermal field around 06:00, where temperature can be easily as low as -18 Celsius.
As for the footwear, a specialized shoe is only recommended for those tours that requires it, as long trekking tours or volcano/mountain climbing. Some comfortable shoes or sneakers are good enough, also don’t forget your sandals. Heeled shoes are best left at home.
Any accessory to avoid sun and dryness, can’t be missed in your luggage: caps, sunglasses, sunscreen (the highest spf, the best), moisturizing cream, lip balm… Solar radiation level is really high in this zone, you can check it HERE.

No es frecuente que la gente sienta malestares por la altura acá en San Pedro, lo cierto es que la mayoría de las veces el malestar es autosugestionado. El pueblo está aproximadamente a unos 2250 metros sobre el nivel del mar, unas cuatro veces más que en la capital del país, Santiago, y el apunamiento comienza a sentirse realmente a alturas sobre los 3000 msnm. Se recomienda a las personas con hipertensión o problemas cardíacos hacerse un chequeo médico antes de venir y preguntar al doctor si pueden subir a alturas mayores que 4000 msnm, pues muchos de los lugares visitados en los tours superan esa altura. (ver sección “excursiones“). Consultar también con el médico por medicamentos contra el mal de altura y sus contraindicaciones. Una alternativa natural para combatir el apunamiento es ingerir una infusión de hojas de coca o colocarse tres o cuatro de estas hojas dentro de la boca, atrás, entre la encía y la mejilla, sin masticar.

Por ordenanza municipal, no están permitidas las discotecas en San Pedro y en los restoranes está prohibida la música estridente y el baile (aunque puede haber excepciones…). Pero si andas con ganas de carretear (fiesta, parrandear, irse de copas…) está la opción de los “carretes clandestinos”: debes estar atento a la salida de los restoranes o en las esquinas de calle Caracoles, si ves que se junta gente, pregúntales dónde es el carrete…

In Chile’s restaurants it’s common to leave a 10% of the bill as a tip. Here in San Pedro you can also leave a tip to touristic guides and workers at lodging services.

Una vez al mes, alrededor de día 10, fecha en que los jubilados reciben su pensión (de ahí el nombre, “feria de pago de jubilados” o “feria de los jubilados”), se instala una feria libre en el estacionamiento municipal (calles Gustavo Le Paige con Carrera Pinto, frente al cementerio, a un costado de la antena de Entel). Allí se pueden comprar verduras, frutas, quínoa y otros alimentos; calzado, ropa usada y nueva, ollas, cactus y otras plantas, dvd’s piratas y cachureos varios. Vale la pena echar un vistazo.

Por acá son un poco caras, pero siempre las vas a encontrar. Las mejores -y más frescas- las puedes encontrar en los puestos que se instalan en el estacionamiento municipal, todos los días, desde las 09:00 hasta las 17:00 (horas aproximadas) y en el camión que se instala en un sitio en calle Caracoles los días martes, jueves y sábado, el cual ofrece verduras, frutas frescas y secas, legumbres secas y especias. (ver mapa). Por supuesto, también se pueden comprar en la “feria de los jubilados” que se instala en el estacionamiento municipal alrededor del día 10 de cada mes.

Las agencias de turismo, minimarkets, cibercafés, oficinas públicas, abren a las 09:00 hrs, con horario de colación entre las 14:00 y 17:00 hrs y cierre a las 21:30 – 22:00 hrs aproximadamente. Los restoranes y botillerías cierran de lunes a viernes a las 00:00 y los sábado y domingo a las 01:00.

¡Hay muchos! Y es por eso que San Pedro es conocido también como “San Perro de Atacama”. Los perros sampedrinos son amistosos, simpáticos y relajados, pero pueden llegar a ser un fastidio para los que andan en bicicleta o en moto, incluso para los peatones, pues dejan sus “regalitos” en donde la naturaleza los llama. Habitualmente no hacen nada cuando te les acercas o los acaricias, pero siempre hay que tomar precauciones, uno nunca sabe a lo que se enfrenta.

Banco Estado sólo opera los días jueves en la sucursal frente al museo Gustavo Le Paige (donde también hay cajeros automáticos) y las transacciones efectuadas se hacen efectivas al día siguiente. Hay Caja Vecina de Banco Estado en varios puntos comerciales, que cuentan con un cupo límite por día y las transacciones también se hacen efectivas al día siguiente.
Banco BCI abrió una sucursal a fines del 2010, la cual atiende todos los días en horario bancario normal (lunes a viernes de 09:00 a 14:00 hrs. excepto festivos o feriados y 31 de diciembre). Está ubicado en la esquina de Calle Caracoles con Calle Vilama.
Hay cajeros automáticos en la sucursal Banco Estado (calle Gustavo Le Paige frente al museo), en Banco BCI y en distintos puntos de calle Caracoles.

No se preocupen, todas las compañías tienen señal (incluso internacionales).

Definitivamente es caro. Para quien vive acá y para los turistas. Pero vale la pena estar acá!!
